Laparoscopic surgery, sometimes known as "keyhole" surgery, is a medical procedure in which a small incision is made and a lighted, thin tube called a laparoscope is used to examine into the abdomen or pelvis. The laparoscope may have a tool for extracting tissue for examination in addition to a camera and lens for viewing. During the procedure, a general anesthesia is used to make the patient asleep and painless. The surgeon makes a tiny incision in the abdomen, generally near the belly button, to expose the organs and create space between them. After passing the laparoscope through the incision, the surgeon views the organs and glands on a computer screen.
